Causes of fading
Contrary to popular belief, fading is caused by more than Ultraviolet (UV) Light. There are actually four major factors that contribute to fading as illustrated in the diagram below:
As you can see, UV light accounts for only 40% of the fading damage caused by the sun which, while significant, is still only a relatively minor part of the problem. Eliminating only the Ultraviolet light simply isn’t enough – you need to address the other causes of fade as well.
The advantage of window film, and the reason it offers such effective protection against UV fading is that it also effectively addresses the other causes of fade.
How window film slows down fading.
Don’t let anybody fool you, all window films are effective at eliminating UV light. Even the clear films will filter out 99% or better of the Ultraviolet. As you can see from the chart above, this will reduce the amount of fading you experience by about 40%. Where you see a real difference in terms of reducing the amount of fade is with the other two factors – visible light and hea, each of which account for roughly 25% of fading.
